5 Ways to Prep for Your First HYROX Race

By Amanda Moore ·

HYROX is equal parts running and functional strength — eight 1K runs, each followed by a workout station like sled pushes, burpee broad jumps, and wall balls. It rewards athletes who train the transitions, not just the individual pieces. If you're staring down your first race, here's the prep we walk our Mesa athletes through.

1. Train the run when you're already tired

The hardest part of HYROX isn't any single station — it's running well after your legs are cooked. Practice "compromised running": do a strength circuit, then immediately run 400–800 meters. Teaching your body to find a steady pace on tired legs is the single biggest race-day advantage.

2. Respect the sled

The sled push and sled pull end more first-timers' races than anything else. They spike your heart rate and trash your grip. Build up your posterior chain with heavy sled work, and practice short, powerful pushes with a low, driving body position rather than trying to muscle it upright.

3. Pace the first run like it's the last

Almost everyone goes out too hot on the opening 1K, then pays for it by station four. Pick a pace you could hold for a 10K and stick to it early. You want to finish the race feeling like you had one more gear — not survive it.

4. Rehearse your transitions

Every second in the transition zone counts. Know the station order, know where your equipment is, and practice moving straight from the run into the workout without standing around catching your breath. Smooth transitions can shave minutes off your finish time.

5. Simulate the full thing at least once

Two to three weeks out, do a scaled-down version of the whole event — even at half the distances. Nothing prepares you for the cumulative fatigue like doing the sequence in order. You'll learn your pacing, your fueling, and where your weak links are while there's still time to fix them.

That's exactly the kind of build-up we program at AMP. If you want a plan that ramps you to the start line ready instead of wrecked, come train with us.
